The Regional Government of Arequipa informed that the second stage of the Majes - Siguas II project will have a new technology for the irrigation system based on pressurized irrigation

The announcement made by the Regional Government of Arequipa represents a major advance for the restart of the works of the irrigation project. The new technology based on pressurized irrigation (used in the irrigation projects in the north of the country) will replace the system of open channels that was contemplated in the original technical file of the project.

This change required a new study for the calculation of the necessary investment and for the determination of a new construction schedule that will be used during the next years in the project. The increase of the investment required will be assumed by the Peruvian government.

Last week the Regional Government of Arequipa and the concessionaire of the Majes - Siguas II project signed an agreement to boost the development of the project, since the second phase of the project should start in February of 2018 and currently the infrastructure of the project shows an advance of 10%.

According to the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation, there are US$ 354 million in water and sanitation projects that are currently paralyzed

During his presentation in the Housing Commission of the Congress, the Housing Minister Edmer Trujillo reported that currently there are 142 projects of water and sanitation that are paralyzed, with a total investment amount of US$ 354 million.

According to the information provided, 55% of these projects have deficiencies in the elaboration of the technical files, the design of the works, the lack of water sources and, mainly, difficulties in the necessary land reclamation. In addition, other factors like the failure to comply with construction agreements, delays in the execution of the works, as well as in the execution of the budget are preventing the unlock of such investment. The regions that present the greatest blockage of water and sanitation projects are Puno, Lima and Loreto.
